Almost Falling

Almost Falling

I’m wondering how to pass the day

feeling down as I do.

I am bordering on self-pity,

a cosy place with chairs, a fire

and scented candles,

the promise of isolation.

Deep breath drawn in,

some minutes of quiet,

a few moments of reflection;

I can start to turn it round.

Today the sun shines,

I am alive,

and that is enough.

Coronation

I remember the day our Queen was crowned.

one house a cinema for the day;

neighbours jostling to view small grey

face encased in coffin of dark wood.

Street celebrations in progress; ration book

food spread leanly along makeshift tables,

flags standing to attention centre stage,

blank faces on miniature horse-guards.

After, a fancy dress parade; Queen of Hearts

out to impress and eager to win,

bedraggled after juice spill, blue bleeding red,

tiny hearts ripped apart and wasps delirious.

I remember the day our Queen was crowned;

our tortoise left home.

Demons of MS

Suffocating

A demon of MS has come to visit,
.
relentless fatigue wrapping its

ugly tendrils around my body

like bindweed, strangling, suffocating.
.
It appears to have brought its suitcase along;

I guess it will be sharing my room.

Perhaps if I refuse to feed it

it will go away.

Fruits of the Vine

Here goes! Thought I would start with a touch of humour.

One large plant,

so far, only six

almost-ready-to-pick

cherry tomatoes.

One large dog,

tongue hanging out, drooling,

gazing dreamily at

one large gap.
