I look at the
Xmas cake
I have made;
it looks sad,
undressed.
Majority vote was
No. Keep it healthy,
they all said.
They don’t even
like cake.
I like cake, and
decide it will
go to the ball.

Healthy? At Christmas? Naah! It looks very good, I can almost taste the marzipan, one of my favourite things. The illustrations look really good, too. A very fitting, succinct poem also, I like the ending with that very seasonal reference to pantomime! Have your cake… and eat it!

I wholly agree with you – Christmas and healthy just don’t work!! And marzipan is part of the essence of Xmas; it is one of those “smells” mingling with all the festive fayre!

No I didn’t make this one!! Mine is a little more conservative but still has lots if lovely unhealthy marzipan and icing on it!!
I would have taken a photo of mine but my camera is broken – I have sent a letter to Fr Xmas politely requesting a new one! LOL

It now has a thick layer of marzipan and white icing on top! And I couldn’t decide which little xmas ornaments to put on (I have a bagful) so they are all on!!
I am calling it Christmas Crazy Cake! 🙂

Good for you! Go crazy I say! I just made a Gingerbread Trifle for work party tomorrow…and put in lots of good ‘bad’ stuff! Don’t eat cake if you don’t want calories, right?
It’s like saying ‘Live without breathing.’

Hi Christine, that is a lovely sweet poem!
The only time of the year to no think of diets is Christmas I suppose 🙂
but a cake like that is almost too beautiful to eat! I will try your recipe next year, this time I didn’t get around it. I hope it can be done a day before Christmas without keeping it in a cupboard for a long time! 🙂 Is that really needed?

Of course THE CHRISTMAS CAKE must go to the ball! There will be unexpected guests who will LOVE it! (“Keep It Healthy” is for Fourth of July or Labor Day–or some holiday NOT Christmas, for crying out loud!) Loved this post and the photo. Starving for that cake right now!

What a delightful poem – crisp, witty and such fun to read. You are clearly a woman after my own heart, Christine, and I applaud your decision wholeheartedly: a big, rich, sticky fruitcake plastered with marzipan and icing as thick as a phonebook is one the things I look forward to most at Christmas, and the very idea of a ‘healthy’ one makes me shudder.
