Cinderella
I look at the
Xmas cake
I have made;
it looks sad,
undressed.
Majority vote was
No. Keep it healthy,
they all said.
They don’t even
like cake.
I like cake, and
decide it will
go to the ball.

Healthy? At Christmas? Naah! It looks very good, I can almost taste the marzipan, one of my favourite things. The illustrations look really good, too. A very fitting, succinct poem also, I like the ending with that very seasonal reference to pantomime! Have your cake… and eat it!

Thank you David.
I wholly agree with you – Christmas and healthy just don’t work!! And marzipan is part of the essence of Xmas; it is one of those “smells” mingling with all the festive fayre!

Thank you Harry!
It now has a thick layer of marzipan and white icing on top! And I couldn’t decide which little xmas ornaments to put on (I have a bagful) so they are all on!!
I am calling it Christmas Crazy Cake! 🙂

Sometimes, Christine, we just need to feel the happiness from indulging our deserv-ed selves of going to the ball! Good on you, my friend! May you dance every waltz with a charming prince ;-). Oh, and enjoy your cake!

Good for you! Go crazy I say! I just made a Gingerbread Trifle for work party tomorrow…and put in lots of good ‘bad’ stuff! Don’t eat cake if you don’t want calories, right?
It’s like saying ‘Live without breathing.’
Last but not least–LOVE this! The wit of it…the truth of it! Now it is dressed for the ball!

You can serve me a Christmas cake anytime you wish, healthy or unhealthy, as long as you have a dash of the spirit of this poem in it.

Cinderella, what I’ve learned from you is that magic always happens when you set about your journey… the proof is in the poem!! I love it, Christine.

Hi Christine, that is a lovely sweet poem!
The only time of the year to no think of diets is Christmas I suppose 🙂
but a cake like that is almost too beautiful to eat! I will try your recipe next year, this time I didn’t get around it. I hope it can be done a day before Christmas without keeping it in a cupboard for a long time! 🙂 Is that really needed?
Love and hugs!

The cake can be made a few days before, no problem, but this type of rich fruit cake is, apparently, all the better for keeping!
Love and hugs Christine xx

I think we have to forget about healthy eating for a day or two Christine, and if there are those who don’t like it? Well, let them eat cake! (but not our cake). Have a Happy Christmas and New Year 🙂

Of course THE CHRISTMAS CAKE must go to the ball! There will be unexpected guests who will LOVE it! (“Keep It Healthy” is for Fourth of July or Labor Day–or some holiday NOT Christmas, for crying out loud!) Loved this post and the photo. Starving for that cake right now!

What a delightful poem – crisp, witty and such fun to read. You are clearly a woman after my own heart, Christine, and I applaud your decision wholeheartedly: a big, rich, sticky fruitcake plastered with marzipan and icing as thick as a phonebook is one the things I look forward to most at Christmas, and the very idea of a ‘healthy’ one makes me shudder. So, enjoy your cake in all its glory – and if you have any leftovers, you know where to find me. N.x

You will be very welcome to a piece – can’t guarantee it will have that extra ingredient as in the oat biscuits!! LOL 🙂

Hi Christine,
I presume the cake has been eaten by now! 🙂 This is such a lovely poem and certainly for me captures the essence of the special times when indeed you have to go all out and make the most of it. Afterall it is only once a year. 🙂
I hope you enjoyed your festivities and the cake! 🙂
