Meditation Time

I couldn’t think of anywhere
I would rather be.
A flock of birds soared high,
busy, purposeful,
backdrop of rare blue
as my eyes closed.
I settled with the breath.

But then I started to wonder
where they all go to die,
and if the little boy across the road
recovered from leukemia;
I remembered his father had left.
I wondered who was in the ambulance
that just sped past, siren screaming.
Was a life about to change for ever?
Or maybe it was a police car;
perhaps it would be on the news.
I wondered if people would ever
stop killing each other,
if kindness would ever prevail.
And I thought about young “hoodies”,
if they are really quite scared and
do their parents make them eat breakfast?
I wondered why some people give up and others don’t.

 I kept repeating gently,
“Not now”, “not now”.
Internal comments, questions,
persistent like a small child.

This is simply excellent. It’s rich in whimsical and sharp observations and thoughts. Are hoodies obedient with their mother’s. It’s a nice image isn’t it. And that siren you mention, could mean a thousand events and changes. You tell it so well. You do the way a mind responds to stimulus so well. You may have noticed that I really enjoyed it. I’ll shut up now

The thoughts that go the mind on the average day, very nice.

Oh yes, so well written Christine, a powerful piece! 🙂 And this happens so often. And it’s interesting that it’s always the negative questions that mostly crop up over and over, the peaceful thoughts always shoved to the back. I guess it’s fear, our main enemy, just occasionally our friend, that is ever present, making us question and double check so much. But maybe we need it, without it we would be a little numb I think – Stepford Wives comes to mind – now there’s a scary thought!!! 😀

And yes Stepford Wives – that is indeed a scary thought! 🙂

Another marvellous poem. So wonderfully evocative of the sometimes struggle during the meditation process. A great example of ‘showing’ rather than ‘telling’.

A really stunning piece of writing Christine! What makes a good writer great is their ability to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, which is what you make seem effortless here. Your observations and imagery are brilliant, in short I love it! 🙂 x

Excellent, Christine–deep, moving, and SO familiar! Makes me want to smile in recollection of the lad who wondered, “What was it the cat wanted to know?” Hope the fatigue is abating, my friend. xx00xx

    Hi Christine,

a very good poem about thinking about life and what matters! Taking time to do that is good I think. 🙂

Giving up can be because of so many things, we never might know why some do. Some are more lucky than others maybe ?

I think the question of giving up is a deep one, possibly depending on a person’s state of mind, attitude, etc? Who knows?! Lol xx

    Hi Christine,
This is such a wonderful and thinking poem! It encourages you to ponder yourself and ask those questions which so many of us abadon with time, age and the hurry of life.

I felt like you had taken a part of my own mind and gave it a voice. I am very much the questioning child. 🙂 I try to reassure my mind that I can’t know it all and I can only make sure my corner of the world is okay. Living be example, being kind etc.
So many questions float on the wind. So many without answer but so many possibilties. It’s part of the complex beauty of life. 🙂
You’ve given air to some, so eloquently. Thankyou for sharing your space. It is also a good reminder of mindful living and fully experiencing the moment. I will take that with me on my walk this afternoon. 🙂

    With lots of love and
    ((( Big Warm Hugs)))

Wow Christine, I love this! The way you just drop the observations in, not over analysing or commenting on them but just noticing, witnessing, such a wonderful depiction of the mind during meditation. Excellent poem, thanks for sharing my friend. Love and blessings, Harula xxx

This is a wonderful poem, Christine, reflecting that struggle between enjoying life as we can but not disconnecting from the pain and suffering of others. But our pleasures, as the opening stanza expresses, especially as they simply present themselves, as in nature, mean we are throwing out good and healing and peaceful energy.

‘They’ always say that when meditating to just go with it … your poem is perfectly named as it does just that.

Taking us back to being a child … just asking, wondering. And that is not a bad thing, at all.

Your poetry is so distinctive – I am so excited by the progression you have made. Hope you had a lovely weekend. ‘Talk’ to you soon, Diane XO ♥

Thank you so much Diane for your warm and encouraging comment.

I think my thoughts queue up Diane, and wait for my time to meditate! But that’s okay. As you say, “just go with it”. We wouldnt be human if we could simply switch ourselves off. But acknowledging thoughts, alliwing them to come and go is the answer I think. I remember my MS psychologist said to me once when I told her my head gets flooded with thoughts when I try to meitate, just treat them like a wandering toddler you are taking for a walk and keep saying to them, “not now, we will do that later”. It works – sometimes!! 🙂

And thank you so much for what you said about my progression with poetry. I still feel so unsure of myself, but the difference these days is, Im not afraid to have a go and put myself “out there” . That in itself is a massive change, and reward enough.

      Lots of love always and
      tons of blessings xx❤xx

Excellent, Christine! Quite evocative and moving.
Your last two lines really grip me:
    “Internal comments, questions,
    persistent like a small child.”

I have many questions, and I guess I can still be persistent like a child.

Thank you very much Fergie. Yes, I think we all have the persistent child in us. Our litle grandson is going through the “why” phase. I seem to have started that phase all over again myself lately and Im sure you will understand this one.

Christine, I did enjoy the poem and had tried for years, unsuccessfully, to meditate. This old grey matter would not be silent.
When I took up painting, I discovered the silence. Amazing! xxxx

      Thanks Lea.

What you have just said really fascinates me. Did I tell you I have been playing with colour with oil pastels? I use any mix of colours and simply merge them together and see what emerges. I havent done this for years; I was introduced to it as a means of therapy a few years ago while away on.a spiritual retreat. I didn’t think I would be able to do it anymore as my right hand no longer works, but I bought some and tried and I can manage.

What I am getting round to saying is when I did the first one last week, it was the fastest two hours I have known! I was utterly absorbed in the moment and had no idea two hours had gone by. So I can totally understand how painting does it for you.

      Love

      Christine xx
