Fluttery Summer Whispers

There’s so much commotion
in the garden today,
nature’s busy town square;
eager bees deep in petunia hearts,
moments of shared passion –
summer’s lust.
Ornamental grasses wave,
coaxed into Chinese whispers
by a playful breeze,
butterflies dizzy with
fluttery-giggle-fits.
A red admiral is stunned;
it’s all too much for her,
fragile wings quiver, exhausted
and she stops, completely used up.
I fear she must be dead,
approach her gently, tearful
holding a sorrowful summer prayer.
But she startles me,
opens her rested wings,
snatches it from me –
kindly of course –
and flies off into the quieter blue.
Perhaps she will save it
for a rainy day.

What a lovely picture you paint, Chris, and I’m so glad your red admiral was able to fly off into “the quieter blue.” Very beautiful words, my friend. Have a beautiful day, too! HBL xx ♥

This is beautiful, and I love the happy ending:-) Wonderfully evocative images, I especially love ‘bees deep in petunia hearts’ – I can almost hear them. Actually, Ill be glad when ‘summer’s lust’ calms a little. I love autumn…H xxx

      Thank you very much Harula!

I love all seasons but I have to say the month of July this year was too hot for me! I don’t often say that these days as we haven’t had a real summer for a few years, but its cooled down here now and I am enjoying the sun without the intense heat.
That said, autumn will be welcome too, especially the colours. 🙂

      Lots of love xxx

Ah, Christine, what a beautiful poem. Rich and full of the joys of nature, the possibility of mortality, and the worthiness of the gift of words. The bird takes with her your ‘sorrowful summer prayer’.
When I read these words I feel I’m sitting just out of sight, seeing what you see, feeling what you feel as I watch you react. I feel a deep joy, knowing that we are forever connected by our words.
    So much love
    Tricia xoxo

Thanks so much Tricia, this is a lovely comment and I love your words “I feel a deep joy knowing that we are forever connected by our words”

I seem to appreciate everything at a much deeper level now; it’s one thing my illness has given me,the opportunity to stop and see, really see. 🙂

I am coming late to comment on this poem, Christine; but have read it several times over the last few days and can’t get enough of it! Such a stunning use of words and images, like this:
‘eager bees deep in petunia hearts,
    moments of shared passion –
    summer’s lust.’
And the image of the Red Admiral stealing your prayer … wonderful! Bravo! XO ♥

Thank you so much Diane! Im so pleased you liked this!

I am really enjoying pushing my boundaries with my writing toward nature. But quite honestly this one seemed to write itself. I think its because I was there, in the moment, soaking up the whole experience. 🙂

Aahh – this is really beautiful!♥ So elegantly written and full of summer, I really felt like I was in your garden for a moment! It’s a grey day today where I am, so that brought some elegant butterfly sunshine into my day – thank you! 😀

Hi Suzy! Thank you so much!

I enjoyed writing this one though as I said above it seemed to write itself!

We have a mixed bag of weather today, it cant quite decide what to do. At the moment the sun is here but there are dark clouds looming! 🙂 xxx

Oh Christine, I enjoyed this so much! My soul is hungry for nature right now, and you’ve brought us all right into the middle of flowers, bees and butterflies. I love your sensitivity to them all – the prayer for the butterfly, her saving it for a rainy day… This poem feeds my heart, thank you!

Hope you’ve had a pleasant weekend, and a good week ahead! Hugs to you.

Thank you so much. Betty! Im pleased you enjoyed it! It was a lovely moment I was able to share with all these beautiful creatures and the flowers. We have had a real summer this year! It doesnt often happen these days. Our seasons seem to have been rolling into one rather odd one over recent years, but this summer has excelled itself! 🙂

We have our son and one of the children here for the weekend over from Ireland. He pops over with one at a time frequently so we can keep the bond we have with them going strong. Then they all come over about twice a year. They have three little ones. And we have two over here so five grandchildren now! We are still growing,!

Have a good week; I hope you are well and settled now in your new suroundings.

      Love and hugs xxx

This is a strong and lovely poem, Christine….we don’t usually hear of lust and giggle-fits about the garden….and some of the best poems are the “gifts”—the ones that seem to write themselves.

Thanks so much Cynthia, for visiting and for this lovely comment.

This one did indeed seem to write itself; that doesnt happen often for me! So I definitely see it as a “gift” 🙂

Thank you Francina! Yes your right, the garden is being a true muse this summer! I think this is the best summer we’ve had or a few years and I have spent much time in the garden now I’m not quite as mobile. Think of what I may well have missed had I not had the opportunity to sit and “be” 🙂 xxx love and hugs xxx
