The feeling you can’t explain
when everything seems just right
and nothing could be wrong,
even though you have a list
as long as your arm
of things you would want to change.
But not on that day
when the bee dived headlong
into an unknown depth,
stayed for unconscionable time,
then emerged intoxicated,
head to toe in smudges,
powdery white – hint of blush.
And when birds sang from the
very tops of swaying trees,
because praise calls out to be sung
from the highest point.
So where else would they go
to sing their own precious song
that filled me with so much joy
on a very special day,
special only because it simply was,
and made all the more precious
because I knew only too well that
like most things in this world
it was going to end,
not in a blaze of glory way
as is often the case,
but softly handing itself over
into a comforting, slowly darkening
in-between space.

What a fine poem! It begins with an intimate take on ordinary nature, which I’ve come to associate with your poems, but then….those last ten lines are just gorgeous!

Thanks so much Cynthia for rhis lovely comment. As you know I am very new to the writing scene and Im often still not sure of myself with it. But your comment has reassured me on this one at least. I take what you say as great encouragement because I know you have been writing for a long time and I admire your poetry very much. 🙂

As each day ends i sense I shall remember your amazingly beautiful words ‘softly handing itself over’.
Ah, Christine, what precious images your words conjure. They also cause me to think on a deeper level – my life could be a gentler thing if I too learnt to – softly hand myself over – to the inevitabilities of life. Such a poetic lesson of acceptence in your words.
I love you and I love your writing

Thank you so much Tricia. This is a lovely comment which has in turn caused me to feflect on handing over; its one of those many concepts that are simple but not easy. I keep having to train myself over and over again to do this. But when I do
manage it life becomes so much simpler and more content with itself, or I should say I become more content with myself.
I have been completely carried away with the bees this summer, something Im not sure would have happened without having the camera, which in turn may not have happened before MS as I bought it to try to keep my hands working. Life takes unexpected turns and twists, some of them seemingly negative, but among all that, beautiful gifts are given and this summer my gift has been anappreciation of the bees in all their wonderful glory.

Thank you very much Diane. I dont seem to be able to let go of the bees this year. They have given me so much joy, inspiration and a depth of appreciation I dont think I have ever felt before. I can look at the photos I have taken and can conentrate on, for exmple, one leg and how it attaches itself to the petals of a flower and for a minute or two I am simply there and nowhere else.
You are right; moments can last forever.

Hi Christine,
What a most beautiful poem. This really reminded me of the simple joy in being when one is surrounded by nature. It makes me look forward to being able to spend more time in my own garden.
Your closing lines are just so..so..good! LOL I ended up re-reading ths poem three times and I’ve enjoyed the smile it brought me each time.
Just fabulous! Thank you for sharing. 🙂
Wishing you a good week ahead.

This is beautiful Christine, and so true!! 🙂 We need these little moments to create balance in our minds, because there are ALWAYS so many things that we want to change, and they really try to dominate our lives and our thinking most of the time, even on a subconscious level. You’ve really highlighted so well here those few precious moments when everything just feels like it’s right where it should be – and what’s the worry! I wonder how many things the bee would like to change!? 😉
The burning question I have now is, are you adding this lovely one to your SoundCloud? 🙂
Journeyintopoetry
Sep 24, 2013 @ 11:24:41
Thank you so much Suzy for this lovely warm comment. It is o very much appreciated. Yes I wonder if the bees do want to change anyrhing. This one seemed to mee to be feeling exactly how I felt on that day 🙂
Oh my goodness, that is a burning question! I think the poem could probably sound lovely read aloud, but Im not sure if it would if it was my voice! I will have to give it some practice and see what happens. Watch this space, I may well give it a try. Thank you for bringing this up, I dont think I would have thought about it! xx

Christine, this is so beautiful! An intimate example of those small moments of joy we must savor and remember (for the “rainy” days). You have a special way of taking us there.
I love the bee that dived headlong into an unknown depth – emerging intoxicated… with a hint of blush. 🙂 I think it’s true those so called “little” things we once took for granted can become the most beautiful and valuable (not to mention pleasurable). I could spend all day watching a spider weave his web and the bumbles rolling in the phlox. When my body won’t let me do anything else, this can be a gift.
Hugs to you, and thanks for sharing your warm, sunny moments! 🙂

Thank you so much Betty. And yes, these “little” things do become the biggest and I am sure I could spend ages watching the spider too. Life takes unpleasant turns but within them we are given gifts we may never have appreciated before.
Hugs and love to you too

I didn’t realise it was possible but you’ve just showed it is. In my opinion your poems are getting better and deeper all the time, and this reflective verse which captures the mood so well is evidence of that. It is a treat to read your words, and the glimpse the vision behind them

You have such great insight in everything you expeience and I wish I had had as much when I was your age. But there is time for me yet! Its a new beginning for me despite this monster of a condition I am travelling with. In fact its the monster that is partly responsible for my “waking up” 🙂
