Dog Diary – Jack (Golden “Retriever”) ***

I’ve been suffering from January blues so I thought I would cheer myself up by writing something lighthearted. So here it is – and it’s all true!! ๐Ÿ™‚

I feel the need to talk about something
I am asked to do.
Itโ€™s about why she asks me to sit
before I am given a treat; ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย  `
itโ€™s not like a biscuit can spill
and surely this particular eating position
makes no difference to a dogโ€™s digestive tract.
It must be so that she feels in charge,
in control of all issues dog related.
Iโ€™m okay with it though,
I rather like her to be in charge;
she is the leader of the pack,
except when I want left-over cat food,
then she is definitely not in charge.
There are some things in life that
one simply needs and
cat food hovers near the top of the list.
Whatโ€™s the harm in a few daily morsels,
although the ensuing battle every time
to stop me is something Im puzzled by โ€“
she never wins.
Does she not recall that I eat poo,
preferably my own
and that if I am desperate
I will even try cat poo.
I watch the felines from the window,
make a mental note of position and
have a snack later in the day.
I donโ€™t think she has a clue that
the other day I ate half a dead rabbit
while running in the field.
Maybe thatโ€™s why I was
violently sick in the afternoon;
it felt like the end of everything.
But it was worth every agonising pain
because the day after I got scrambled eggs.
Life here is definitely good
despite all the odd things that she does,
and there are many.
I really do love her however peculiar she may be
and what is even more wonderful
is that I know she really loves me too.

*** I donโ€™t seem to be able to do this; perhaps I need therapy.

Thank you very much Ina! Yes, Jack and Lewis were good friends. Its a shame he had to move on. I remember when I used to walk Jack, I had to let him off the lead as we approached the house where Lewis lived as Jack would always attempt to jump over the gate (he never succeeded!). If he had been on the lead I would have gone with him!! Lol

Christine, you even provide your own therapy. Then you share it with us to help us deal with the grey and gloom. Jack is fortunate indeed!
Perhaps Jack will keep a journal?

I just love this, Christine! Every single thing in it is so familiar to me. I have a large, ten year old, mixed breed dog (lab and hound) mostly black with white markings. She came with the name Chloe when we rescued her, and had so many hang-ups we didn’t dare change it. She won’t retrieve, steals cat food, eats poo, and resents having to sit for a treat. She feels personally insulted by the truck delivering parcels and the postman as her deafening bark reminds me regularly. She puts her forepaws in my lap and pretends to be a lap dog even though her hind legs are still on the floor; sometimes she does this to comfort me if I’m in tears. We love each other madly…..dog love is such dear, dear love.
Isn’t it funny, too, our tendency to make our animals talk…sometimes I create cartoons, with my pets as the main characters! I second that idea above, of Jack’s keeping a journal; I, for one, would thoroughly enjoy it!

Hi Cynthia. Thank you for your lovely comment! Its such a great bonus when someone understands exactly what youre saying! I have a wonderful image of your Chloe trying her best to be a lap dog. I wish I could draw! And I understand that she will do this to comfort you . Jack does his own version when Im upset; he comes to me and “gives” me one of his forepaws and he will keep taking it back and giving it again.

It is funny how we make our animals talk, but there is so much expeession there its difficult not to if you have imagination. i know some “animal people” who think this idea is ridiculous, but I guess they are entitled to that opinion just as we are to ours ๐Ÿ˜ŠThe journal idea is now in my head waiting to take root!

Dear Jack, he is such a beauty, Christine. I love this poem written from his perspective, Billy Collins would be impressed. You’ve expressed perfectly how many dogs will obey, up to a point, but for most pooches there are certain ‘no go’ areas. The final bit about being a Retriever who can’t retrieve cracked me up.

I hope it has helped lift your spirits a little my friend. It certainly lifted mine.

We have a heatwave on the way in Victoria. Yesterday was rather warm, today also, then a slightly cooler weekend. But next week is going to be a scorcher, and I’ve an airconditioner that won’t play nice and my helper is on holidays. This has absolutely nothing to do with your poem. Think I just wanted to whinge. ๐Ÿ™‚ Sorry ’bout that, it’s just when I start commenting I feel like we’re sharing a conversation.

I wouldn’t bother with therapy for Jack. I’m in therapy and it don’t seem to be doing much for my behaviour. I’m still a compulsive waffler. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Love you to bits

I so wish we lived near by. We could laugh and get up to mischief on our good days, and practice swearing on our bad. We could have Teddy tea parties, and serve Jack a little cat food for his afternoon tea, a treat on the condition there was no poo eating. ๐Ÿ™‚

It’s good to have dreams. We may not be neighbours, but we are dear friends, and that’s much to be thankful for.

Although this might’ve been ‘merely’ clever, it is full of soul and heart and the truth of your love and bond with Jack and all of nature. I can’t say enough how I love this – it made me smile and feel warmed and enveloped in its charm! Must share!

And I will say – what a hoot in this and what followed:

I will even try cat poo.’

Christine, what a handsome dog you have. Even my little dog was snacking out of our cat’s litter box when we first adopted her. I had to cut a cat size hole by the door of the basement room we keep her food and “things” in so that the little robber could no longer steal. It worked. I just hope our cat never fattens up or she won’t be able to get through it… ๐Ÿ™‚

Great poem, Christine. Maybe that’s what I should try, a poem like this. I have certainly not been feeling myself for some time now, though I am starting to write again–finally, at least a little. Our two dogs, Juneau and Pax, must be related to your dog. Juneau is especially fond of eating dead rabbits even though we strive mightily to keep her clear of the rabbits that insist on coming into the yard, and, on the rare occasion when she does triumph over us, upsets us as she gets sick. I am sorry that you are blue and hope writing this helped. Life snarls us around, and sometimes wallowing in joy for even a brief moment lets us flow from minute to minute without realizing that we really are okay with living.

Aahh – how sweet! And the behaviour sounds so like my family dog many years ago – I guess they are very alike!! ๐Ÿ˜€ That was a close shave with the dead rabbit! The mother to our dog died eating a dead rabbit! ๐Ÿ˜ฆ It was a farm dog and someone (not the farmer) had gone round poisoning the rabbits. Two dogs and three cats all joined in the rabbit meal – they all died – horrible! So tell him that Suzy said to keep away from those dead rabbits! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I was reading not long ago that their thing about eating poo comes from way back wolves and how they would hunt for food and eat anything with some nutrition in it, and that included poo. And the reason they love cat poo is because it is higher in protein and fat and therefore more tasty for them. I am full of useful facts like this!!! ๐Ÿ˜„ Xx

Yes, I remember my parents telling me about the poo protein!! It’s a useful fact to know – for a dog owner anyway! Our dog used to do that, and weirdly she loved cow poo, great mouthfuls of it – ugh!!!!! My dad used to get furious with her when she rolled in fox poo though – oh she stunk to high heaven!! I think that was some kind of disguise thing, as if the fox wouldn’t know she was a dog if she met it – haha! ๐Ÿ˜†
