Safe

The garden is a timeless world
with no map;
I simply lean a little more
to the right or left
as did Cezanne
and see it all.
I sit among the flowers
alone but not lonely;
they have become friends,
the kind who stay around,
forgive and maybe even forget,
keep with you
when fear grips and
nothing makes sense.
Bees forage without regrets;

I can only move forward,
thoughts now infused with gratitude
for the privilege of life.
They become soft,
muted with warmth,
welcome antithesis of
yesterday’s sharp edges.
Elated birdsong
disperses the stillness and
although I have no idea
who or what is holding me together
I feel safe,
for today at least,
and that is enough.

“Here on the river’s verge, I could be busy for months without changing my place, simply
leaning a little more to the right or left” – Paul Cezanne

    I love the line “Bees forage without regrets” and as for the conclusion, it is as lovely as the person who wrote it.

      Thank you Peter! I was just watching the bees the other day and they just get on with life’s purpose for them and they seem to know exactly what it is and with no drama, they get on with it. Whereas we humans… Well this human at least! 😊

    Wonderful Christine! Cézanne himself would have appreciated the warm cocoon of your garden and no doubt would have painted it from a number of perspectives! I get a sense that your garden is to you what the sea has always been for me.

    I have been thinking of you and hoping we would have another lovely piece from you soon. So…you’ve been in the garden with Cezanne, eh? No wonder you feel safe! You’ve also brought to mind for me that quotation from Cicero which I’m sure you know: “If you have a garden and a library, you have all you need.” Happy musing. 🙂

    This is lovely, Chris, and reminds me also of time at the beach or mountains…so many places that bring us serenity and safety. Beautiful quote at the end, too. Have a wonderful weekend! ♥ xo

    You’ve described a beautiful state of mind Christine, in a very honest, but also elegant way, I love this! I can relate to that kind of thinking very much. There are so many things that I’m not entirely happy with in my life, some looming on the frightening horizon, yet strangely these days I can feel this kind of serenity, where the small, the minute, the moment of now, and the things that seemed trivial when I was younger, mean a lot more. I’m reacting a lot less to those things that scared me, and taking a different view of life than I did before.

    It’s a good feeling to be alone, but not feel lonely. I remember feeling a sense of loneliness in a full house when I was teenager. And it wasn’t because I had no-one to talk to either. Loneliness can be a very intense unwelcome feeling, probably generated in the mind by something we wouldn’t believe was causing it – the brain usually does that!

    I like the leaning towards the right or left, that’s a subtle and effective way to convey seeing life from a different angle. Seeing more, maybe? I’ve been thinking in the last few days just how blind we can be to the world around us, how depending on our state of mind, depends on how we actually see any of it.

    It’s good to read that you are feeling like this, despite life and all it throws (and it really chucks it sometimes!) to be able to stand in serenity for a while is absolutely priceless. And some would gladly sell everything they have, to obtain that – if they could buy it. But it’s free – if it can be found and retained! 🙂

    Thank you Suzy so much for your very thoughtful and comprehensive comment. And I agree it is very easy to feel lonely in a crowded room even if the crowd are friends or family. I do treasure the moments when I feel as I do in the poem, and my garden is always the place that brings this feeling alive. Sometimes it’s harder to attain than others though! 😊 x

    Wow, Christine – I could really relate to this. Your garden poetry, the small moments of joy one feels just seeing bees buzzing around flowers (ah, nature!) and being thankful for that instant when one is most alive. Being one with it all makes us feel “safe” – it makes us immortal.
    Wishing you a good week full of sunshine and visits to your garden! 🙂

      Thank you very much Betty! I knew you would appreciate the feeling intended here and Im so pleased it came across well. We have a change in weather here at the moment; Im having to put my flower/bee photo taking on hold, it’s either too windy so the flowers wave around too much or its raining! Fingers crossed for a bit more summer!! 😊 x

    This is so beautiful Christine, I think I need to keep it somewhere to read again. ‘Safe for today at least’. For some reason those words really touch me, something about giving thanks for the moment and living in the now and acknowledging that’s all we can really hope or ask for. And I just love the Cezanne quote, ‘a little to the right or left’. There’s something very wise about staying put, being grounded but still changing your perspective in flexible responsiveness and curiosity. Wonderful poem dear friend! Hugs, Harula xxx

      Thank you very much Harula. I live in the now so much more these days than I ever did. Ive always been aware of the now being all we have but never really been awake to it properly, never truly engaged with it. Always too busy!! 😊 Hugs xxx

    Hi I’m visiting from Minuscule Moments. While reading your lovely poem I’m watching my hubby weeding. The Late afternoon spring sun glowing in the new oak leaves. Bees flitting about in the bottlebrush.
