The Journey Begins…
My name is Christine and I have been “flirting” with poetry since 2011.
In March of that year, I was diagnosed with MS and I am now embarking on a process of recovery both physically and emotionally. Recovery is a long, slow and sometimes difficult path, but can also be life changing, as I have already discovered in my recovery from alcoholism. My first task has been acceptance, which some days can be a little shaky as far as the MS goes, but I am getting there. Embracing my condition rather than wrestling with it has been important, but equally I will not allow it to define who I am. I am hoping the poetry will help with this.
I know very little about poetry and its various forms etc, but I am reading and learning. So I write my poems as therapy for the MS and also because sometimes it is simply fun to do, especially as I now spend more time at home.
This is a big step for me, letting others read my poems. I hope you enjoy them and they make some sense.

Yes,”taking that next step” is what we need to do and an important one for me is living one day at a time. Life is much more manageable when lived like this, although sometimes difficult to do.

Right Christine lets get started 🙂 when people click your BLOG title they want a direct link to your blog not an inderect route as you have setup.
I have been to 1000s of blogs in 4 years and i have never seen this before 🙂
Leave the profile as it is, but do away with all the links ( Christine Moran, journey into poetry ) etc.
Put your ” jouney into poetry ” HOME page link into your website link in personal settings, this will make your name live to your site.
I did, and others will get confused, when they see two links coming from the same web site that do not link back to it.
Hope you don’t mind me saying this, just a bit of advice, Harry

Hi Harry
Thank you for the advice and of course I don’t mind.
However I was confused before(not being too clever with IT) but now I am more confused. I may have to get my daughter to help me follow your instructions.
Quite a few people have found me though, that’s why I wondered why you can’t..
I will keep trying.

This is your site url https://journeyintopoetry.wordpress.com/
Go to dashboard, users, click personal settings, account details at the bottom, there you will see where your email address is to be entered, and web site this is where you copy and paste your site url and thats it.
I would undo what ever you did before to make it easy for everyone, and people like me who are really old and dribble all over the key board 🙄

Hi Christine/dribblingpensioner, I think Christine’s site fomat is fine. I too am confused with your request comment, especially these lines:
Put your ” jouney into poetry ” HOME page link into your website link in personal settings, this will make your name live to your site.
I did, and others will get confused, when they see two links coming from the same web site that do not link back to it.
I had no trouble reaching this site, I like the way it is set up simple and easier to navigate. There’s nothing wrong with having the about page on the home page, it only takes a click to read the poetry.
It is up to you Christine but I like it, it seems others like it too. Do you like it, because if you do then that’s all that matters.
Sorry Harry, but I have to disaggree with you.

Sep 18, 2011 @ 11:19:25
Hi Martin,
Thank you so much for this. Yes I do like it. I did it as simply as I could because that is all I can do!
And I couldn’t understand why others had managed to find me after I had received Harry’s comment.
As long as people can find me then I am happy. I don’t know why Harry cannot access me.

Martin Shone

I meant to add that the counter also let’s others know how many visitors have read your work which in turn might encourage them to delve deeper into your site 🙂

Sep 18, 2011 @ 11:50:41
This is what makes the world go round disagreement 🙄
As i said i was confused because in the years i have been here i have never seen it that way, opening at the about page i have seen, but i can get to your blog now.
The experts say your blog should open at the home page and then they can go to where they choose.
Also if the blog doe’s not come up within 5-6 seconds they will leave.
I do agree with the hit counter, people like to see it, i did’nt notice that.
Martin, i like to disagree with people thats what my blogs all about 🙂
But at the end of the day its up to Christine, i’ll not fall out with her or you 😉

Hello, Christine. Thanks for visiting my pages.
The particular way poetry brings focus to the mind is one of the therapies we can all benefit from. A friend of mine often insisted that fine poetry is the highest of art forms. Sometimes I think he is right – but then I see a fine row of leeks and am not so sure.

As I said to Granbee I have only been absent from here due to Xmas.
Unfortunately the one finger typing is a permanent part of me now, my right hand having deteriorated during the past year; it has now retired I think! LOL:)
It is amazing how we can adapt though and I am becoming quite a whiz kid at the one fingered approach – it'[s just that I get impatient when I have so much to say, then I don’t check enough for typos!!

Hi Christine–just wanted to salute you! We all have a journey, and struggle is part of the “glory”. Some days we take Big Hard steps–some days all we can manage are the “baby steps” (do you recall the movie, “What About Bob?”)–but we get “there”, if we don’t give up. We are not alone–ever–even when it seems are “fans” have all gone home. God is there with His unfailing love, and mercies new every morning–Lean on, Press into Him.
I read some of your poetry this morning, and celebrate it with you! Writing has often been a life-saver for me. It’s productive and fun–and sharing it here is a Good Thing!
I wish you a blessed day, as you manage each step–physically, emotionally, creatively!

Beautiful. And I so hope you’re getting a lot out of writing. I find it cathartic. I also have a medical “condition” that has caused and still causes a lot of angst for me. If it wasn’t for working on my writing I don’t know what I’d do! Great blog, and thanks for visiting mine. I look forward to reading you.

oh my God! Christine. I love your blog and you are so very talented. It breaks my heart that you can’t use the computer for a while because of your hand Neither can I, however for the last couple of years I have been using the Dragon voice recognition program and it has saved me from untold angst, frustrations, and throwing things against the wall. Sometimes it doesn’t curse as much as I would like it to and I have to teach it to say certain off-color words but I love it just the the same. My thoughts are with you and take care.

Lovely to hear from you Jennifer and thank you so much for commenting here.
Acceptance is a huge phenomenon isn’t it and I only recently realised how much of a “grey” area it is rather than”black and white” – by that I mean I find it comes and goes, sometimes bits of it stay and then other times it floats right past me! 🙂 I think you may , hopefully, understand what I mean!
It’s lovely to meet you. And as for my poetry, I certainly don’t claim to be a “poet” as such, I simply write my feelings and thoughts which come straight from the heart. It helps me so much and if others get something from it then that is a lovely bonus. And it’s great to meet so many lovely new people.
Christine 🙂

Hi, Christine. I discovered you while visiting Dennis Lange’s page, and I noticed your comment on his page today about the Haiku. Do read his page “Forms of Poetry,” because he has a great explanation of Haiku. In fact, I have been an English and literature teacher all my life, and I told him that his explanation of that form is one of the best I’ve seen anywhere. I also read several of your poems on here today. They are really good. You have the ability to describe feelings and experiences in a picturesque way.
You mentioned in your bio about not knowing a lot about poetry or its “forms.” One of the great things about poetry is that, although we can discipline ourselves to fit our words into specific forms that must meet explicit criteria, we can also let ourselves write free verse, or even invent our own forms intirely. We’re still poets. So, while it’s fun and good practice to sometimes make ourselves abide by the rules of haiku or the sonnet, for example, it’s also good to courageously put our stuff out there in our own personal patterns too — and dare the world to read it and be blessed by it. Go for it!
(And please don’t feel you must respond to this comment if you are needing to rest your hands. I understand.)

Hi Sandra,
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this comment. I really appreciate it and felt it warranted a reply though it may be short 🙂
Your words have really encouraged me because I often wonder about what I write and it’s effectiveness or value in the poetic world! All I can say is that although not particularly intellectual, my poems emerge from the heart and are therapeutic for me and that is what my blog is all about. If others can connect and/or benefit then that is a huge bonus. And I have made so many new and interesting friends.
Thank you again! I could have said a lot more but I am in the painful process of applying some self discipline , at least where my hand is concerned! 🙂
Best wishes
Christine

Christine, your soft spoken words moved my spirit and heart! I share something in common, with you, I too was diagnosed with MS, last December! But i have chosen to embrace it instead of fearing it, not letting it tear me down. I too write poetry sharing my heart and the love that was placed there by a loving creator to as many as i can for as long as I can. I too spend a lot of time at home as i am permanently disabled. There is a soft beauty your heart brings to share, as i feel what is alive in your spirit! It is a blessing to welcome your heart into our blog world. I have written for years and never chose to share but with a few…when I became permanently disabled i was reminded by my first love, that He gave a gift. He chose the time for me to share and it has made my life much better with all whom i have come to know, love, and respect! I look forward to enjoying your words of life! You are blessed and also you are an overcomer! Keep smiling and moving forward!

Wendell.
It’s lovely to meet you! You have no idea how much joy it gives me when someone new to me connects with my blog, especaially someone who is going through similar difficulties.
My diagnosis a little complicated! To cut a long story short for now, I am told my MS is secondary progressive. But when they gathered my medical history together it became apparent that I have had remitting relapsing for about 30 years!! I had several weird and unpleasant symptoms back in the 80s and 90s (numbness in arms and back, electric shock down legs when I bent my head resulting in loss of use for 4 months, and a pupil in my eye dilated for 2 months) all totally unexplained at the time and put down to stress; I was given tranquillisers and thought that I must be a very weak person unable to handle life! Then nothing till 2001 when my hands went numb and still are. Then in 2005 it all started. Different symptoms began to appear and rather than go away they got worse so an MRI and lumbar puncture followed and here I am with a four wheel walking aid! I am still in shock I think.
I have no idea where the poetry came from; I am not by any means poetic!! All I know is that it became a door I pushed open for myself in the face of adversity. I find it therapeutic and also sometimes fun! I hope that by putting them out there some of them may “rub off” and help others going through similar struggles, but I do write about stuff not related to MS too!
I have days when I wonder where “I” have gone and grieve for my old life, but I am meeting some lovely and inspirational people on this new and sometimes frightening road, and feel that I can only grow through all of this.
I have visited your blog and clicked “follow”!!
Love

Hi, Christine…decided to wander over here after our interaction over my cat poem and pay you a visit.
I wish you well on your journey of rediscovering how to be in the world with a chronic illness. No easy feat mentally or physically but I send you my support.
I’m new to poetry too…just a couple of years now after starting my blog and being encouraged by a friend to join a poetry writing group. What an eye opening and fun time it’s been. I’m slowly learning some forms (just tried a sonnet!) and having fun meeting some very talented and kind people out here in the blogosphere. Welcome!

I am still wondering how on earth I managed to get here!! lol I never thought I had an ounce of creative writing ability in me. But adversity has apparently proved otherwise! My poetry helps me so much, as an outlet for expressing feelings and frustrations, but also allows me to play around and have fun with it too. I still know nothing!! But I am enjoying reading some good poets and learning from them reading blogs on WP etc, and just simply enjoying the journey!
I actually put a Haiku on Poets’ Corner the other day called Aloneness if you want to check it out. It’s a start!! 🙂
I Would love to read your sonnet!
Hugs to you too 🙂 x

I thought the same thing about myself and writing but it’s been a wonderful experience of expansion for me and being acknowledged by others. Writing helps me deal with feelings too…brings out things in me that I never knew existed.
I read your lovely haiku and left a comment. Just beautiful… I posted my sonnet on Poet’s Corner today…it’s called “When Young”. I really didn’t master the form but still managed to get a lot of it right…they’re really tricky! If you ever try one, let me know.

Keep up with the poetry – you have a beautiful talent. I think many poets write from experience of adversity – I know I do. I think we see the world differently.

If it wasn’t for the internet I would be quite lost and I think quite lonely too. This is excellent – because I know for me, when I began blogging (which in fact to me is the first draft of a painful part of my life, in novel) – I know that it saved me, very slowly, from the depression and the fact I tried to kill myself. So with your MS, it will distract you, & give you something worthwhile to focus on.
I hope things are good for you now – it’s a year almost since.

And you are so right! Starting this blog was the best thing I could do for myself during the roller coaster monthe of post diagnosis.
A friend suggested I try poetry and start a blog. i looked at him and laughed. Me?! Poetry?! But I did, and it unblocked an area of creativity I would never have thought posible. I write very simply, mostly from personal experiences, but I am actually branching out now!!
And I actually produced my own book of my poems for family and friends and gave them out at Christmad. I have a surplus which I am going to give to the MS Trust to sell for their fundraising.
As far as the MS is concerned, it is slowly drip feeding its ugly progression, but I have my poetry and a wealth of friends I didnt know at the beginning of 2011.
Life is different and it is hard, but it can still be good
I am pleased for you too, that you have gained much from the blogging world; it can be a Godsend. I hope you are well. And a very happy New Year to you.

I am really excites that poetry can be a form of therapy. It there a medical name for using peotry for treament? Something like poetrotherapy? Smiles. Recovery may really be slow and painstaking, but it really makes a better person. Something good can always come out of any condition, and I’m glad that your poetry has found expression. Hi Christine,
I read your poem “befriending the enemy” in open door today and really think it is good. I like you have MS and walk badly. Do go for a mobility scooter – they have given me a new lease of life. I have a variety – one which is light that I could put in the car ( prefer help now ), one that can go cross country (which my dog used to sit on ) and an in between (which next week is going to Morocco with me)
Best wishes,
Jane

Hi Jane,
Thank you very much for getting in touch. You have helped me to give myself a kick on this because as yet I am just looking at scooters but have made no decision.
I definitely will get one (or two!) I was in fact wondering whether to get more than one so I could have one for the car. Now you have encouraged me to go ahead and do just hay! So a big thank you! 😊
Enjoy your trip!

Hi Christine,
I read your aritcle in the Open Door magazine which I receive due to my sister having had MS. The first thing that caught my eye was the pictures – first of the redundant walker and then the one of your lovely dog “waiting for cake”. !! I read the poem and then decided to read the article. I have a dog of my own and understand what benefits there are being able to get out and about with them to see the beautiful world and nature around us. He looks like a great friend.
It also prompted me to move on with the decision of departing with my sister’s scooter which has been kept securely in my cousins garage since last April. We live in London so if you are interested please let me know.
I hope that you continue to get out and about as much as possible and continue with your wonderful poetry sharing.

Hello Christine,
What a refreshing experience I had this morning when I read MS Open Door. I am a new member of a MS support group and I, too am a recovering alcoholic (sober 10 yrs) and was diagnosed with MS several weeks ago. I agree that ACCEPTANCE IS THE KEY. We will get through this, one day at a time, and look at all the support you’ve got from fellow poets and fellow MS’rs!! We are all on a journey and heres to it being an more comfortablr ride with all the love and support I feel from this poetry web site 😀 xx
PS. I’m a dog lover too (rescue greyhounds)
Thank you for your encouragement today!!

Hello all,
I have recently been diagnosed with MS. Huge shock at first, but now the news has sunk in I am determined that I’m going to turn this negative into a positive.
One of my symptoms is a very weak right hand. This I found very annoying whilst reading a thick paperback book (hardbacks are totally out of the question!)
I love books and an hour in Waterstones is a real treat – especially my local one in Gloucester as it has a Costa Coffee in store!! Just after I was diagnosed, my husband treated me to a Kindle – I had always vowed never to use one of these electronic gadgets – but I am now overwhelmed now by it’s simplicity and convenience!!
I still miss browsing through the charity shops for one ….or maybe a dozen paperbacks now, but to anyone who has problems with a standard book should take a look at one of the electronic readers.
Also, can I encourage anyone who likes to knit/sew/crosstitch etc to take a look at a website called Stitchlinks.com. Medical evidence has proved that stitching can help with pain management – and this week I have managed to knit a 6″ square. I am starting a new project to make a small blanket for use at my MS Society club.
I have also started reading poetry (thanks to Christine and this site) Some of it I don’t understand – but I’m determined to give it a go.
Thanks to all for your light hearted messages,
Love Jackie from Gloucestershire 🙂

Dear Christine—The MS anthology came and I have been reading it today. (Finding all your own poems first, of course.) The title word “Touching” is appropriate, but I was more than touched by your words; I was deeply moved. Age and crippling arthritis has me with my own pain and lack of mobility, so I can empathize to a degree, but only imagine the greater courage you require to see the good in each day. Your work and spirit are beautiful. You, are beautiful. I am glad to know you.

Oh Cynthia thank you, both for buying the book and for the warmth in your heartfelt comment, which has brought me to tears. I am a big softy though and it doesn’t take much to make these eyes peer with blurriness from under water. However they aren’t sad tears, maybe melancholy, but not sad; they are also of gratitude for your friendship and support. Hi Jackie,
I’m not sure if this post will get to you. Cynthia directed me to your comment on her blog and so I came here to thank you. You made my day! To have someone I don’t know read and comment on ‘A Sin for a Son” is truly gratifying.
I read your own introduction and empathize as I have Parkinson’s , which is, I believe, more manageable than MS but triggers some of the same reactions and emotions. I often think that it is trials; such as MS, or loss of a loved one, unrequited love, or some other intense emotion, which trigger the most beautiful poetry. I praise you for your writing.
Thank you again,
Cheerio,
Jane

Hi Jane,
How lovely that Cynthia directed you to my comment about “A Sin for a Son”. I thoroughly enjoyed it and just couldnt put it down. I read from a touch kindle now, nowhere near as satisfying as the real thing but needs must and I am grateful for the technology that allows me to read comfortably, as my hands are now weak.
Im sorry to hear you have Parkinson’s. As you say, the two conditions are different but any chronic disease such as these, I’m sure,, evokes many of the same emotional issues. I had no idea I could write at all until after my diagnosis. A friend who writes poetry suggested I have a go and I haven’t looked back. You are right when you say intense emotions can trigger such things. ( , ,.lL.,l”……..,,”,,,,,, ‘,,,”uuuuuoooo ,,,,,,,,,,,”m, ) 😊😊 My cat has just added her reflections on all this! She always wants to help me type!
Thank you again for acknowledging my comment. I will pop over and visit your blog, and I look forward to reading more of you!

I still consider myself a beginner in the world of poetry but I am thoroughly enjoying the freedom it gives me to express myself. I do, however, still hear that constant nagging voice of mine in the background expressing self doubt. But since I joined a writing group I have gained some confidence and have met a great new set of likeminded friends who all support each other.
It’s lovely to ‘see’ you. 😊 xx

Not sure where to put this question but will try here. I edit a newsletter for the ms society, will it help if I advertise your book Dancing in the Rain in the next newsletter.

Hi Chris. While i was on vacation I finally got a chance to read your poetry book and I couldn’t put it down. It was beautiful and touching. I read aloud some of my favourites to my husband and he was touched as well. I left a review on Amazon.ca here in Canada. Well done, my dear! 🙂

Thank you so much Jennifer!, for buying a copy, and for this heart warming comment. I still feel very much a beginner in the poetry world and can doubt myself. But I do feel I have achieved something with the book and I am very grateful to Bennison Books for taking me on board. 😊. Also many thanks for leaving a review, that is very much appreciated!

Hi Chris,
I came across your story through Smorgasboard and am really pleased I’ve found you. I can relate to so much of what you say as I have an auto-immune disease called Dermatomyositis, which affects my muscles and skin. Mine goes up and down a fair bit but I’m doing quite well at the moment. I am also into poetry and photography and am married with two kids and two dogs. I tend to write about what we get up to despite the disease and I really want to help others and help them feel less alone. I know on my bad days, it can feel quite isolating but then the pendulum swings and it comes good. You just need to ride out the storms. xx Rowena

Hi Rowena,
It’s so good to meet you, and thank you for visiting and following my blog. I have just been over to visit yours and left a comment on your latest post which moved me very much.
I hadnt heard of your condition before; there are so many autoimmune conditions out there..
We sound quite alike in certain respects; I, too, wish, through my writing, to help others feel less alone. What started out as therapy for myself has now taken a very different direction. It has a knock on effect as knowing I may help others, gives me a warm feeling too and encourages me to carry on writing.
I have three children who are now grown up, and we have been blessed with five grandchildren (all 6 years and under!) We have a golden retriever (who refuses to retrieve anything!) and two cats. I love the garden and one of my new interests since diagnosis is to take close up photos of flowers especially with bees inside them! 😊. This is now more of a challenge as I am finding it increasingly difficult to hold the camera but I can still do it, just. So my photos aren’t perfect but imperfection is more attractive these days! I haven’t managed to take any so far this summer (I am in the UK), as I fell very badly, courtesy of MS five weeks ago and I am only just beginning to recover. But we have August yet so hopefully I may be able to take a few. I have a flower photo blog called Perfect Imperfection if you are interested. The link is on the right hand side bar of my poetry blog.
As you do rightly say, we just need to ride out the storms.
Chris xx

Good luck with your recovery. Writing is a good thing to have on your side. It has always served as a means of healing in my life for just about everything. If you embrace it, it will serve you well.
